Arnaldo Adnet: slow travel

Between a wild explorator and a mass tourist, there's large range of possibilities to do your trips. Our choice is helping you to be a slow traveller (as much as posible, or as long as you want).

A slow traveller could not discart the relationship between his trips and the planet. Travelling is not imaginable, if there's no interess about the local history, and considering the consequences a travel experience is mandatory.

Montreal 2006

Montreal 2006 is a memory for a lifetime. First landed in Quebec City with my rowing mates Artur and Ilka. Then Me and my coast Artur drove up to Mont Tremblant, where we had the chance of rowing, swimming and fooling around the beautiful village.

Then down to Montreal for meeting our host, registering, practicing at the rowing venue Parc Jean Drapeau, and party, party, party, guided by Hudson (newest candian citizen, originally from Pernambuco).

Definetivelly, we had the wonderful closing ceremony with Martina, Mark, Liza and Cirque du Soleil, KD Land, among other stars.

Slow Travel Brazilian Cuisine Experience

Suggested Program

9:30 am – Meeting at the Hotel lobby and leave by taxi or walking to visit the FEIRA (an open air street market in Ipanema or COBAL in Leblon). Walk around the market, while Slow Food consultant provides explanation about our vegetables, fruits, spices, fishes and habit.

After visiting the Feira - around lunch time - we will go to a good  “botequim” to taste some salgadinhos, sucos and caipirinhas.

Enjoy some free time, after lunch.

4:30 pm –Meeting at Margarida’s home for the hands on cooking class when will prepare some brazilian typical dish, such as:

  • Margarida’s mango soup
  • Moqueca de peixe e camarão à bahiana
  • Passion fruit crêpes

Or:

  • Sopa de palmito fresco (fresh heart of palms chilled soup)
  • Bobó de camarão (a Brazilian specialty prepared with shrimp, manioc and spices)
  • Cuscuz de tapioca (coconut and tapioca dessert with cachaça sabayon)

Two kinds of Brazilian hors d’ oeuvre will be also tasted.

Selected Brazilian wines will be served with dinner: sparkling wine (our prize winning “Champagne “) to begin, white wine for the sea food and an interesting late harvest with dessert.

There will be beer and caipirinhas as well if someone prefers.

Each one of the group will receive a handout with the recipes and a small glossary on Brazilian cuisine.

Belem & Marajo: my way to see Amazonia

This is the real gateway to the Amazon. Belem  warmth embraces you as soon as you get there. The heat comes from forest, the sky, the waters, and mostly its people. Trust me!

They're party people, and you can notice it on their day by day meals, the smell of its fruits, the collors of the port etc.

You'll be surprised by the cultural heritage.

Rio Adventures and Climbing

 Climbing Guide Gustavo Sampaio

I call this guy my bro’. As a matter of fact, he used to be my brother in law for 17 years. He has climbed in Yosemite (El Cap), Wind Rivers, Australia, and set many big-walls in the city of Rio and in the mountains upstate.  He’s sweet, handsome, friendly, professional knows all about walking, climbing or hiking up the incredible mountain sets of Rio de Janeiro. See what he says:

Our goal is not to sell routes or itineraries, but to provide a service that includes the identification of our client's background in his/her climbing to then indicate an appropriate route which should be something hard enough so it's not boring We beleive there's more learning, reward and safety when these considerations are made. One other important aspect we also consider, which surely corroborates for a rewarding experience, is the shade. Most climbs, depending on the season, are on the shade either morning or afternoon. Note that during the summer months (December-March) some climbing routes may not be available due to the lack of shade which may cause extreme heat on the desired faces."

Slow Leme

www.cep.ensino.eb.br/seccomsoc/passeioForte.htm

Visit the Historic site of the Fort. We can walk up there and enjoy an unique view, that used to be a military privilege for decades, and now is open to the public every weekend or holiday. If you stay at the Luxor Continental you may ask the satff to get you a pass even on the week mornings. Luxor Continental is a very weel kept traditional property with every modern hotel facilities, such as a small fitness center with a stunning view of Copabana Beach, a sauna and a a pool bar with good service and that view again. It's perfect for families, business travellers or for those who like to avoid the huzzle and buzzle, but want to be nearby(we never know...).

Blog Entry EN - Following the footsteps of Black Orpheus Jun 26, '06 6:50 PM
for everyone

Tour created and guided by my friend,  Isabell.

Who doesn’t know the famous film Orfeu Negro by French director Marcel Camus, the winner of the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) in Cannes in 1959?

The Story of Orpheus and Eurydice was filmed in Babilônia, one of the two favelas in Leme, Rio de Janeiro.

On the top of the hill you can still visit the old ruin of the telegraph house that was turned into Orpheus’ house for the film. The view from there is simply breathtaking.

Slow Urca

http://www.almacarioca.com.br/coutinho.htm

Walk along Pista Claudio Coutinho in Praia Vermelha and trek up Morro da Urca (the first stop on Sugar Loaf Airway). Take the cable car down, after a pic nic with a breathtaking view. If you want to make it longer, you may choose on open air live music at a Pizza Place, a very good brazilian fruits icecream, or maybe a sightseeing of the first city neighborhood, with its Old Fortress, the Cassino ruins, the first city street, and much more. I've spent part of my childhood here. I could tell you stories...

Slow Ipanema

This is where I live, this where I work, this is where I love to be. I try to provide a different experience, decided upon the start time, according to the weekday, the weather, cultural agenda  and our personal preferences. Try to feel Ipanema with me!

It might include breakfast at Cafeina on Farme Street, or at  Palafita Cafe by the Laggon, a small recital at Toca do Vinicius, a drink at Garota de Ipanema Bar,a walk along the beach, a few lessons of brazilian footvoleyball game at the beach,  visit to a book/musice store (with coffee moment) and maybe a sorbet tasting at Mil Frutas. Light healthy meals, or the best babecue in town for lunch. Maybe you’d like to watch my morning rowing trainning to Montreal 2006 (Yes, I’ll be there!). Watch the sunset from Arpoador rocks. Are you interested in literature, Gastronomy, arquitecture, decoration, fashion, sports, nightclubbing? Tell me it all, so I can try to reach your tastes. www.ipanemaplazahotel.com

Brazilian Cuisine Convivia

My dearest friend Margarida Nogueira is the Slow is Food leader in Rio and S.F. pioneer in Brazil. She takes us to a free market, where we learn about brazilian exoctic fruits, fresh vegetables, flowers and sea fruits. Then we taste a special sort of fruits caipirinhas before going to the kitchen where we can personally help her preparing a multicourse bahian meal, or a special menu according to our personal preferences. Well, we could arrange many diverse experiences in gastronomy, when we have her as our guide. Why don'nt you check it?

Stay Slow

In Rio, there’s a place to stay in enchanting ambience, stunning view, friendly company and strategic location: near it all, but away from the city madness.

It’s a deluxe guest house headed by my friends François & Rodrigo (now joined by Jacques, François brother). Visit their website and see each suite with its unique decor and a a sample of its charming atmosphere that has made a few of low profile celebrities its happy guests.

www.lamaisonario.com

We also have our preferred hotel partners in Copacabana or Ipanema, such as Ipanema Plaza, Pestana, Parthenon Arpoador, Luxor Continental, Copasul or a few personal friends that could host guests at their homes (with or without themselves).
